Alec visits Secondary and High Schools across the UK, offering sessions for Year 7 upwards (S1 in Scotland, Y8 in Northern Ireland).  Visits are primarily to support Reading for Pleasure, rather than supporting curriculum objectives – though these will benefit too! Sessions can include traditional stories (and urban legends); poetry; extracts from modern fiction – or a mix of all these elements.  Performance style sessions can be to more than one class; interactive workshop style sessions are best with a single class; both are great fun!

I thought it was fantastic.  The students were really buzzing about it, and booked out all the poetry books – just what I wanted!  — Teacher, Preston, 2013

Session times are normally around 45-50 minutes.  Alec usually does four sessions a day.  Workshop sessions could include reading poetry aloud, or group re-telling of stories.

Top Tips

  • The School Library’s a great place for storytelling!  If not, try the Hall, or a Drama Studio.
  • Include a special Meet-the-Guest session over lunch, for pupil librarians, or reading groups
  • Why not make stories part of your transition work? A fun way to welcome local Primary children
  • Even in the upper school, storytelling supports Public Speaking, Drama, and Childcare teaching
  • Your local School Library Service might suggest schools who would book Alec on an adjacent day, leading to reduced expenses for both of you

Alec’s happy to include INSET for teachers, or an entertaining Parents Talk, for a small extra fee.

You were absolutely brilliant.  — School Librarian, Devon, 2012

He was epicness on a stick!  — Student, Northern Ireland, 2011
